In January, my family decided to relocate which meant I wouldn’t be able to continue in-person lessons with my students. The move was unexpected and I didn’t want to leave them to find a new teacher in the middle of the year. I decided I would offer them the option of doing online lessons and continuing the journey we had already started as student and teacher. All but 1 stayed, and together, we have navigated through the transition to online lessons over the last half year. After having the experience of teaching online, I wanted to share three reasons you’ll love online lessons.
- CHOICE
Students have a wide range of choice when choosing a teacher for online music lessons. Online lessons take away the barrier of proximity and students can have access to teachers all over the world. Students can find a teacher who they truly connect with or who offers a specific skill set that might not otherwise be available where they live.
- CONVENIENCE
Communicating online means all of your “stuff” is in one place (and never gets lost). Students can access all of their materials on Google Classroom including their weekly agenda, practice tracker, rhythm exercises, theory homework and music. As long as you have reliable wifi, your device, and your instrument, you can have your lesson anywhere. This also means you aren’t spending time commuting to and from your lessons. Who doesn’t love that?
- ACCESSIBILITY
Students and teachers can stay connected in between lessons through google classroom. I always encourage students to leave me a message if they do not understand something and I can respond on google classroom. Students also have access to resource videos which are uploaded once a month. They feature specific skills or concepts that the student is learning about and they are meant to be revisited as a resource.
Switching my studio to online lessons has been a learning experience for both myself and my students. I do miss seeing them in person but there have been so many amazing improvements in my teaching and their learning that can only be attributed to our online lessons. We love online lessons and you will too!
