If you’re looking for a way to energize your vocal students while hitting multiple curriculum expectations, I’ve created something that might be just what you need.
The Four-Part Vocal Mash-Up Assignment is a creative and collaborative project that asks students to arrange the choruses of three popular songs into one cohesive mashup. But it doesn’t stop there—students must also arrange three-part vocal accompaniment (soprano, alto, and bass) to support the melody, notate their work using Flat.io, and then perform the final product.
This project hits on so many important musical skills:
- Composition and arranging
- Harmony and voice leading
- Score writing and digital notation
- Group collaboration and rehearsal
- Performance technique
- Reflection and evaluation
It’s a fantastic way to apply the creative process in a meaningful, student-centered way—and it’s also a ton of fun! Students are highly engaged because they get to choose songs they love and make them their own.
I’ve aligned the assignment with the Ontario Arts Curriculum, and it includes everything you need:
- A detailed assignment handout
- Notation requirements
- Process expectations
- Printable submission checklists
- Rubrics (checklist and leveled)
- Reflection prompts
- A sample score template
- Clear links to curriculum expectations
Whether you’re teaching vocal music, general music, or a mixed-level group, this project works beautifully as a culminating activity or performance-based assessment.
