Looking for a fun and meaningful way to wrap up your vocal music unit? Let me introduce you to one of my students’ favourite assignments: the Mini-Musical Performance Project!
This project combines everything I love about music education—creativity, collaboration, performance, and reflection. It’s the perfect way to engage your grade 9 and 10 students while hitting all the right curriculum outcomes.
Here’s how it works:
Students form small groups and work together to create a short “mini-musical” using 2–3 songs of their choice. Each student takes on both a performance role and a production team role—like choreography, set design, narration, or costuming. They plan their script, rehearse their medley, and present their piece to the class.
It’s a fun, low-pressure way to build performance confidence while allowing students to express themselves and work as a team.
What’s included in the resource:
• A detailed assignment overview and rubric
• Clear teacher instructions and classroom implementation guide
• Editable student checklists, planning templates, and rehearsal sheets
• Peer and self-assessment tools
• Reflective journal prompts (Google Doc and Form versions!)
This project can be completed over several classes or condensed into a shorter unit. It works beautifully as a culminating assignment—or as a springboard to performance-based learning at any time of year.
