Looking for a fun and meaningful way to wrap up a vocal music unit? The Mini-Musical Performance Project is one of my students’ favourite assignments, and it brings together so many of the things I love most about music education: creativity, collaboration, performance, and reflection.
It is a great fit for Grade 9 and 10 vocal music students, and it works especially well when you want a project that feels engaging, student-centered, and performance-based.
How the Project Works
In this assignment, students work in small groups to create a short mini-musical using two or three songs of their choice. As they build their performance, each student takes on both a performance role and a production team role.
For example, students might contribute through:
- choreography
- set design
- narration
- costuming
- props
- rehearsal leadership
Together, they plan their script, rehearse their medley, and present the final performance to the class.
Because students are involved in both the creative and practical sides of the process, the assignment encourages teamwork, responsibility, and artistic decision-making.
Why Students Respond So Well to It
One of the things that makes this project work so well is that it feels fun without losing its educational value.
Students get the chance to perform in a lower-pressure setting while still building confidence and developing important rehearsal and presentation skills. At the same time, the project gives them room to express themselves, make creative choices, and collaborate with their peers in a meaningful way.
That balance makes it a strong option for classrooms that want performance-based learning to feel purposeful and enjoyable.
What Is Included in the Resource
The resource includes everything you need to guide students through the full project, including:
- a detailed assignment overview and rubric
- clear teacher instructions and an implementation guide
- editable student checklists, planning templates, and rehearsal sheets
- peer and self-assessment tools
- reflective journal prompts in both Google Doc and Google Form versions
Because the materials are editable, the project can also be adjusted to suit different classroom needs and teaching contexts.
Flexible for Different Timelines
Another benefit of this assignment is its flexibility. It can be spread across several classes as a larger culminating task, or it can be condensed into a shorter unit depending on your schedule.
It works well as:
- a culminating vocal music assignment
- a creative group performance task
- a collaborative arts integration project
- a spring performance unit
A Creative Way to Build Performance Skills
If you are looking for a project that helps students build performance confidence while also developing collaboration, creativity, and reflection, this assignment is a strong option.
The Mini-Musical Performance Project gives students the opportunity to take ownership of their work and bring something original to life in the classroom.
