As music teachers, we are always looking for ways to help students connect more deeply with their art. That is exactly why I created The Soundtrack of My Life, a culminating assignment designed for senior vocal music students.
This project invites students to choose songs that reflect meaningful experiences in their lives. As a result, it becomes much more than a performance task. Instead, it gives students the opportunity to explore who they are, reflect on how music has shaped them, and communicate those connections to an audience in a thoughtful and personal way.
What Students Do in the Project
The assignment includes four main parts:
- song selection and reflection
- a visual presentation such as slides, video, or a poster
- an oral explanation connecting their song choices to their identity
- a final vocal performance of one of their selected songs
Because the project includes both reflection and performance, it allows students to engage with music in a way that feels personal, creative, and meaningful.
Why This Project Works So Well
One of the things I love most about this assignment is that it gives students space to bring their own voice and experiences into the classroom. Rather than simply performing a piece they were assigned, they are asked to think carefully about the music that matters to them and why.
In addition, the project encourages students to build skills in several important areas, including:
- personal reflection
- creative communication
- cultural and contextual understanding
- vocal performance technique
That combination makes it a strong fit for senior students, especially when you want an assignment that feels authentic and purposeful.
Curriculum-Aligned and Easy to Use
This assignment is aligned with the Ontario AMV3M and AMV4M curriculum and assesses students across the creative process, cultural context, personal reflection, and vocal technique.
To make it easy to implement, I have included everything you need in an editable format, including:
- the assignment handout
- reflection prompts
- rubrics
That means you can adapt it to your class while still having a clear structure in place.
While this project is aligned with the Ontario AMV3M and AMV4M curriculum, the editable format makes it easy to adapt for other curriculum expectations and classroom needs.
A Meaningful Way to End the Semester
Whether your students are preparing for future auditions or simply love to sing, this project gives them a chance to shine in their own way. It is also a beautiful option for wrapping up the semester with intention, creativity, and purpose.
If you are looking for a senior vocal music project that feels reflective, personal, and performance-based, this one is ready to go.
